HAMNET Report

HAMNET is a voluntary group of South African radio amateurs who make their unique communication skills available to assist and help others in distress during and after disasters.
HAMNET is represented on the sub-committee of the South African Search & Rescue Organisation, and is also affiliated to IRESC.

Much of Hamnet’s activities have been focussed on the current Soccer World Cup, but we have not lost track of what is happening around us. However, again thanks to Dennis ZS4BS who is off to Switzerland on the 22nd of June for an IARU Region 1 Conference, who sent me the latest copy of the ARRL ARES E-Letter.

What came up for discussion due to requests from readers, was simply, what is the ARES code of conduct – which could apply very nicely to not only HAMNET but also to any emergency group who render assistance!

Listen to this report from Hamnet's National Director, Francois Botha, ZS6BUU

It is a bit long, but some of the more appropriate points are highlighted below.

Quoted below are excerpts from the East Coast District ARES Code of Conduct:-
ARES members are the personification of Amateur Radio not only to the public but whoever calls on them for assistance.

Members will conduct themselves with respect and courtesy to those whom they serve.  They will be listeners and communicators.
Members will not act as or be perceived as agents or employees of the persons they are serving, they are the serving agency and have no authority to act on behalf of an agency.
Members will not use profanity, vulgar language or language or expressions which may be considered derogatory when in public.
Members will not park or restrict areas unless specifically authorised or invited to do so.
Members will not use flashing lights while vehicles are underway since it is illegal in some states in the United States.
Members will not solicit contributions or gifts, merchandise or services from any individuals or businesses while using the name of their organisation.
Members will not use the logos or identifying marks of the agencies they are serving without their approval or permission.

Applicants with a dubious track record will not we allowed to serve in the organisation. Prospective members must be able to pass respective credential requirements as laid down by certain states.

Hamnet members have a set of training modules, a Manual and a CD that contains all the necessary requisites to become a full member, but suffice to say, exercises and experience eventually ensures that we are up to any call that may come our way

Reporting for Hamnet this is Francois Botha – ZS6BUU.
