Ofcom: Maritime Spectrum Pricing

The UK regulator Ofcom has published a statement setting out its conclusions on the proposal to apply Administered Incentive Pricing ('AIP') to the maritime sector.

This relates to radio licences used by shore stations, rather than ships themselves where there are no plans to apply AIP fees. The underlying principle on which decisions have been based is that AIP can help to reduce excess demand, ensuring that this scarce resource is assigned to those who value it most highly.

In some instances, Ofcom recognises that fees alone may not be sufficient to address spectrum shortages. Where this is the case, Ofcom will continue to play a leading role with other regulators, internationally and at home, in finding complimentary solutions.
