Early-bird bookings for AMSATCON 2006 running out

If you would like to take advantage of the early bird rate to book for the SA AMSAT satellite conference on 25 March in Durban, do it this week. The full programme and registration forms are available on www.amsatsa.org.za.

This year's programme has been devised to appeal to a much wider audience while it also has enough content to interest persons who are directly involved in satellite and amateur satellite communication.

The key note address will be delivered by Prof Justin Jonas, Head: Dept Physics & Electronics, Rhodes University and Managing Director: Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO), NRF. He will make a presentation on the planned Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a major radio astronomy project for which South Africa has made a bid to bring the world-wide project to South Africa.

Ms Pontsho Maruping, Acting General Manager: Frontier Programmes of Department of Science and Technology will discuss South African Space where to next? Later this year South Africa's second satellite will be launched. This project is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology and will include scientific experiments including projects from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and SA AMSAT.

The Amateur Radio payload will provide radio amateurs with satellite communication and include a project which will teach learners more about space communications. Several papers are included in the programme about the new satellite.

The conference is supported by the Department of Science and Technology. Their sponsorship has made it possible to keep registration fees low and offer a special registration fees for students. All participants will also receive a CD with the presentations.
