Special Event Station for 'Bounty' 150th anniversary

Norfolk Island VK9N is a self-governing Australian external territory, a tourist destination, and now the focus of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers.

Part of the celebrations is special event station VI9NI that will be much sought after during its month-long activation.

HMS Bounty sailed from England on December 23, 1787 with Captain William Bligh and a crew of 45 men bound for Tahiti to collect food plant samples.

On April 28, 1789, Fletcher Christian and part of the crew mutinied and set the Captain and 18 members of the crew adrift in a 23-foot boat.

They reached civilization and then the hunt for the mutinous bounty crew began - so did the term "bounty hunting".

The mutineers plus six Polynesian men and 12 women established the colony on Pitcairn Island.

In 1854 the penal colony of Norfolk Island was closed, stood empty until it was offered to and accepted by descendants of the Bounty Mutineers. It is that 150th anniversary that is being celebrated.

From the 24th of May to the 21st of June, the Oceanic DX Group is mounting special event station VI9NI.
