Legendary engineer to be remembered

Chippenham Amateur Radio Club is participating in a special event in the village of Box to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of legendary British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Brunel is perhaps best known for engineering a network of tunnels, bridges and viaducts for the Great Western Railway between London and Bristol. One of the major landmarks on this link was the Box Tunnel, completed in 1841 close to Box. At two miles long, it was the longest rail tunnel in the UK.

A group of steam engine enthusiasts have arranged for a Great Western Railway locomotive to be stationed at Box on 29 May to mark the bicentenary of the great engineer’s birth.

Chippenham Amateur Radio Club plans to join in the remembrance celebrations by operating special event station GB200IKB on the same day from Selwyn Village Hall in Box.

The club will focus on the 40/80m bands and 70cm/2m simplex or repeater working. Further details about the Isambard Kingdom Brunel celebrations can be found at web address www.boxparish.org.uk
