Foundation Corner - Band Plans

A wide variety of transmission modes are used by radio amateurs.

Within one amateur band, activity can include Morse code, digital techniques, voice, television and satellite.

The best way of avoiding clashes between these activities is to set aside band segments for them.

This is done through the Band Plans. It makes sense to give everyone a fair go. Clashes still occur at times and the usual reason is lack of awareness of the band plans. Most radio amateurs are willing to change frequency if the problem is explained to them politely.

On the VHF and UHF bands there are calling frequencies. These are "meeting places" and should be used only to make initial contact before moving to another frequency.

Refer to the current band plans and you can't go wrong.

Enjoy being a radio amateur and what the hobby has to offer.
