GB2RS transmission update

As announced during February, experimental WinDRM digital voice transmissions are being carried out as part of the GB2RS news service. The software for this can be downloaded freely from the Internet.

Although the format produces very high audio quality, it is more susceptible to variations in propagation than the MT63 data mode. Good signal strength is required at the receiver, necessitating effective antennas at both ends of the radio circuit. The type of computer sound card in use may also be a limiting factor.

It has been agreed with the RSGB's spectrum manager that both the WinDRM voice and the MT63 data transmissions on top band will be moved as from today (Sunday 5 March) into the 3kHz digital sub-band set aside for this purpose in the IARU HF Bandplan. Accordingly, the MT63 data bulletin will move to 1,840kHz USB and likewise the WinDRM digital voice experiments using USB.

This Sunday, the 2045UTC MT63 transmission will not take place on top band, in order to allow careful setting up of the WinDRM transmission that will hopefully commence on 1,840kHz at 2115UTC. The MT63 data news on 3,600kHz will go out as usual at 2015UTC and so will the LSB analogue voice news on 1,990kHz at 2130UTC.

Reception reports are welcome during the latter after-news net, and may also be sent to the GB2RS news manager via gb2rs@<no spam>ntlworld.com
