Radio Liberty towers to be blown-up next week

Radio World quotes a Catalan newspaper report as saying that the thirteen radio towers formerly used by US-financed Radio Liberty at Playa de Pals in Spain are to be blown up next week.

According to the report, 16 kilos of explosives will be used, and the antennas will be simultaneously destroyed on Wednesday, 22 March at 4 pm local time (1500 UTC) by collapsing towards the beach, well away from any housing.

The newspaper says the cost of the project is about US$1.68 million including the removal of electric installations and generators, underground gasoline deposits and concrete antenna guy foundations.

It says the Catalan government has discussed using the main buildings as a telecommunication museum or offices for a future nature park.
