'Coat hanger' causes severe interference to distress channelIn New Zealand, a jammed-on microphone caused severe interference problems to the VHF Distress channel 16. The offending transmission was traced to a yacht in the marina. The microphone was clipped into a bracket which was attached to a bulkhead. The yachtsman had picked the microphone as a handy coat hanger and had draped his jacket over it. The jacket was removed and the transmitter turned off. New Zealand's Radio Spectrum Management will follow up with the yachtsman to ensure this does not happen again.
