Ofcom Consultation - 10 GHz and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

On Thursday Ofcom published a discussion document on 10 GHz and the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The document proposes a condition that could be included in the licences that are awarded if Ofcom concludes that it may need to make the spectrum available to meet the needs of the Games.

Ofcom continues to consider how to proceed with awarding wireless-telegraphy licences to use the 10 GHz, 28 GHz, 32 GHz and 40 GHz bands and plans to publish further documents in the spring.

Responses to the discussion document published today are due by 12 April 2007.

In the past Olympic Games have been heavy users of the Radio Spectrum and the London 2012 Games may require more bandwidth than ever before for video, voice and datalinks. The overall planning and co-ordination of frequency spectrum for the 2012 Games will be a major task and it is good to see that Ofcom are addressing this in a timely manner.

I wouldn't be suprised to find that 10 GHz isn't the only part of spectrum that will be needed. There could be heavy demand at both UHF and S-Band (2+ GHz) as well.

Fortunately some 112 MHz of prime UHF spectrum may be available as a result of Digital TV switchover so the pressure is likely to be on S-Band where temporary sharing may take place.
