Ofcom Proposals for RFID Equipment

On Tuesday the UK regulator Ofcom gave notice of its proposals to amend the Wireless Telegraphy (Radio Frequency Identification Equipment) (Exemption) Regulations 2005 in order to comply with a European Commission decision.

The proposed amendment seeks to remove certain technical restrictions from the 2005 Regulations, which made RFIDs available on a licence exempt basis.

Further details can be found at: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/rfid/

It relates to authorising the use of the 865 - 868 MHz band for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) equipment on a licence exempt basis.

It is regretable that the CEPT and North America appear to be standardising on different frequencies for licence exempt operation in this part of the spectrum. A single world standard somewhere in the 850-920 MHz region would
have been preferable.

RFID is certainly a boom area at the present time, it was one of the motivating factors behind Laird Group PLC's takeover of Cushcraft Corporation who also make Amateur Radio Antennas, see http://www.southgatearc.org/news/
