The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union will honour Peter Senger, Chairman of the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium and Director DRM, Deutsche Welle, with a lifetime achievement award at the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2008 (Kuala Lumpur, 10-13 March, 2008). The special award will be presented to Mr Senger at the opening session of the symposium on 10 March.
The ABU says radio broadcasting has received a new impetus with the advent of the digital radio transmission system suitable for radio services in the medium and shortwave frequency bands. The non-proprietary system, known as the DRM system, has been developed by the DRM Consortium.
The ABU award to Mr Senger is in recognition of his commitment and long-time contribution to the development of the DRM standard, as the Chairman of the consortium. Given that many of the world’s large mediumwave and shortwave broadcasters operate in the Asia-Pacific, the ABU believes the DRM system has the potential to bring about a revolution in the radio broadcasting industry in that region.
Mr Senger started his career with Deutsche Welle, Germany in 1965 after he finished his study as Broadcasting Engineer in Berlin. Until June 2002 he was the Chief Engineer of DW and Deputy Technical Director. Since 1998, he is the Chairman of DRM, a world-wide consortium for the development of a global standard for digital transmission in the broadcasting bands below 30 MHz. Mr Senger received the first life-time award of the European Broadcasting Union in 2003 for his engagement for international broadcasting.
