Radio Council bans spectrum sharing by satellite, WiMax services

The publication Electronics Weekly reports on issues regarding the sharing of 3.4-4.2 MHz between satellite and WIMAX operators.

The EW report by David Manners says:
Concern that Wimax signals may interfere with satellite signals appears to have been headed off by a decision from the World Administrative Radio Council (WARC) to ban the sharing of ‘C-band’ spectrum by both satellite and Wimax operators.

A report from the Satellite Users Interference Reduction Group (SUIRG) stated:
‘Several national administrations around the world have designated portions of the frequency band 3.4– 4.2 GHz for use by terrestrial wireless applications such as Wimax and future mobile services. However, this band, commonly referred to as the C-band, is already in use by satellite services, radar systems and domestic microwave links.’

The report went on to conclude that: ‘The results of the testing showed that the Wimax transmit signal could cause significant problems to a digital signal well in excess of 12 km away’.
