School pupil develops Space Particle Detector

Peter Hadfield, a 17-year-old student, has won the first ever National Young Scientist of the Year award for developing a hand-held particle detector called Lucid.

The particle detector will be sent into space on a Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd ( SSTL) satellite and used for research in 2010.
