Foundation CornerOne of the many great things about amateur radio is that it's a hobby which is portable. Take it with you on day-trips, holidays or business trips. Modern compact multi-band transceivers make it easy to go portable. You will need a power source, which could be battery, generator, solar-power or if you're lucky, mains power. A suitable antenna or antennas, and antenna tuner are also required for the bands you intend to use. There are regular contests, or field days, specifically designed to encourage portable operation, give participations the opportunity to test out their station performance and hone their operating skills. Portable operation has its serious side too. During times of major disasters it's often the radio amateur who has able to use their portable equipment to provide communications. Members of the Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network, WICEN, hold regular training exercises to maintain their disaster preparedness. Enjoy being a radio amateur and what the hobby has to offer.
