South African hams to get tower exemptions

New regulations to be promulgated by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism on 1 July will exempt towers for use by radio amateurs, which are 15 metres or lower, from Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

Currently amateur radio towers are subject to such studies which are cumbersome and expensive.

It should be noted that the erection of towers is still subject to local Metro and Provincial Regulations. These regulations vary from area to area.

The SARL Council seeks your support to obtain details of local regulations. Please email any information that you may be able to obtain to secretary@sarl.org.za.

Councillor Deon Irwin, ZS1ZL, is working on the Tower project and requires as much local input as possible. This will assist the SARL in setting up a data base and plan further interaction with local authorities.
