SARL Radio Technology in ActionThe recent SARL Radio Technology in Action programme held in Port Elizabeth in association with the Port Elizabeth Amateur Radio Society was well attended and a great success. Lectures drew interesting discussion often giving the chairman of the session a difficult time to keep to the time table. SARL President Graham Hartlett said that he valued the support from the local club and said that the SARL will work towards making the RTA an annual event. The next RTA will be held at the University of Stellenbosch, Faculty of Engineering on Saturday 13 May starting at 09:00. The programme will start with a plenary session with presentations of general appeal to any person who has an interest in radio and electronics, an ideal opportunity to introduce some one to Amateur Radio and the SARL. Tony Voorveld will talk about the development of radio and re-enact the first radio transmissions made by Marconi from the Villa Griffon. Warren Botten of Clearline will talk about surge and lightning protection. The reference to surge protection is particularly relevant in areas where load shedding is practiced as power outages are often associated with spikes and brownouts. The lectures presented in the two streams will follow an operational and technology pattern with exciting presentations covering from top band DX-ing to Satellites and Software Defined Receivers to 9 600 baud packet. The full RTA programme is available at www.sarl.org.za. For copy send an email to armi@sarl.org.za. The entrance fee is R20 payable at the door and includes entry into the attendance draw. Learners and students enter free of charge but do not enter into the draw. Source: The South African Radio League
