A report published today by the European Media Forum, a branch of the independent research institute the European Policy Forum, says that the BBC ought to sell off its flagship radio networks Radio 1 and Radio 2 as soon as possible.

According to the report, the UK radio market is suffering from "stunted growth" because commercial companies cannot compete with the huge budget of the BBC, and its ability to cross-promote its radio and TV services.

The report argues that the public service role of Radio 1 and Radio 2 is "minimal", and both stations would flourish as commercial operations.

The report's author, economist Keith Boyfield, says that selling Radio 1 to a commercial rival could bring the BBC up to £200m, and Radio 2 could be worth as much as £300m. That extra money would help the BBC to finance its core public service duties without being such a burden on licence payers. The BBC recently asked for a substantial increase in the mandatory licence fee.

The BBC has responded to the report by saying that both Radio 1 and Radio 2 offer diverse music, documentaries and current affairs shows that can't be found in the commercial sector. The Corporation argues that the stations provide innovative and challenging content that the market would not otherwise provide
