Teen radio ham is new Delaware Communications Corps head

Delaware's new Communication Corps coordinator is a 19-year-old college student and ham radio operator. He also has more experience in emergency communications than many radio amateurs twice or three times his age.

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency has chosen Justin Kates, KB3JUV, to head its newly formed Communication Corps.

Managers say that Kates, who is a University of Delaware freshman,, will coordinate Amateur Radio operators across the state in the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other emergency.

Kates is believed to be the youngest person in the nation to hold this level of responsibility in an emergency response organization. The Delaware Communication Corps program is funded by a Department of Homeland Security grant.
