ESA select British astronautThe European Space Agency (ESA) has selected British Army Air Corps pilot Major Timothy Peake to join the Astronaut Corps. Maj Peake was chosen after a rigorous selection process from 8413 applicants, around 800 of whom were UK citizens. He will now undertake basic training at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany, with a view to a future space mission from 2013 onwards. One of his many challenges will be having to learn Russian. The first UK astronaut was Sheffield-born chemist Helen Sharman GB1MIR in 1991. During her stay on the Mir Space Station she carried out a series of medical and agricultural experiments as well as Amateur Radio contacts. A picture of Helen receiving her Amateur Radio licence can be seen at Read the full BBC news report 'It's ground control to Major Tim' at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8059999.stm Video - Esa unveils six new astronauts ESA Astronaut story
