Ofcom publishes Draft Spectrum Plan for London 2012On Wednesday the UK regulator Ofcom published proposals for managing the airwaves for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. These will support the thousands of different wireless services needed in the run-up to and during the seven weeks of the events. These include private mobile radios in and around Games venues across the UK, and wireless cameras and microphones to broadcast sound and pictures to a global audience of five billion viewers. The Draft Spectrum Plan sets out what spectrum Ofcom will make available, how it will license its use and how it will minimise the risk of interference, to meet the Government’s guarantees on allocating spectrum for the organisation of the Games. The consultation, which closes on 5 August 2009, can be found here http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/ As expected, to cope with the heavy spectrum bandwidth requirements for video, voice and data, temporary use will be made of both Amateur and Amateur Satellite Service allocations above 430 MHz during the games. The OFCOM video titled 'Ofcom: Helping to deliver the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games' can be seen on below:
