VK licence numbers

The growth of amateur radio in Australia as a result of licence restructure that began in October 2005 is pleasing, but now more must be done to encourage others to become radio amateurs.

Figures released by the WIA President Michael Owen VK3KI at the WIA AGM included that 15,510 licences were held as at 1 April this year after four years of overall growth.

On 1 April there were 1,818 Foundation Licences, a third issued in the past year, while 149 former Foundation licensees had upgraded. Some 115 upgraded to the Standard Licence and 34 to Advanced Licence.

The number of candidates undertaking Foundation assessments has declined as expected with a pent up demand for an entry level licence having been met.
