Fast-Forward for the WIA

The WIA is moving ahead even faster following the Victorian Clubs Forum held last weekend attended by 15 radio clubs. Barry Robinson VK3JBR who chaired the meeting explains:

The Forum lived up to its expectations in providing an excellent networking opportunity for radio club officials.
In addressing the gathering, WIA National President Michael Owen VK3KI described the WIA as being in a period of evolution, with a good structure in place, and seeking feedback from radio clubs on a range of matters.

A spirited discussion ensued on possible criteria for club affiliation with the WIA. Trying to find affiliation requirements that would meet all types of clubs across Australia is not easy. The club delegates indicated that requiring a minimum percentage of club members who are WIA members may not be appropriate for some clubs.

A series of promotional posters produced by the Eastern and Mountain District Radio Club created interest among the club delegates. Michael Owen VK3KI undertook to obtain cost estimates to produce amateur radio promotion posters that could then be offered for sale to radio clubs.

All clubs were keenly interested in learning about the Foundation Licence that is due to be introduced next year. The WIA has produced a draft syllabus. It is now determining how best to conduct the practical assessment element of the Foundation Licence. This may require examiners undergoing an accreditation course.

Michael Owen VK3KI conceded that the issue of insurance for clubs is very complex. The WIA is talking to insurance providers about the types of cover possible.

The proposed Hamexpo Victoria 2006 gained in-principle support from the club delegates. The idea is for a public to promote amateur radio and combine with WIA National annual general meeting.

A local mini-broadcast of Victorian club news is being considered. The WIA VK3 Advisory Committee is also looking to supplement the VK3BWI network with
transmissions through repeaters, provided by clubs or individuals, to increase the reach of the WIA National Broadcast.

In concluding the Victoria Club Forum, WIA National President Michael Owen VK3KI expressed his appreciation to the organisers, and paid praise to the quality feedback he had received from the club delegates.
