Australia's first WIRES-II node now on air

Tony Langdon, VK3JED says Australia's first WIRES-II node is now on air on the VK3RTL repeater in Melbourne on 438.600 MHz.

WIRES-II is a Voice over IP linking system that is similar to IRLP in that it uses the Internet to link distant radios, but there is no facility to connect directly from a PC.

Unlike IRLP and EchoLink, WIRES-II is commercially produced and distributed by makers of Yaesu equipment.
The WIRES-II system is designed for easy installation on a Windows based PC and will interface with almost any FM transceiver or repeater system.

If you're in the Melbourne area, using WIRES-II is easy on VK3RTL.

To call a node, simply dial the 6 digit node number, which can be obtained from the WIRES web site. To end the call, press #9999D or #99999 when you are finished. There are also many conferences, which you can join for roundtable QSOs.

VK3RTL also supports IRLP and EchoLink connections as well as WIRES-II.

For more information on WIRES-II, including operating hints and node lists, try the WIRES-II site. For more information about VK3RTL and its implementation of WIRES-II, email Tony VK3JED at vk3jed@optusnet.com.au
