WTSA-04 outcomes positive for Australia
The establishment of a next generation networks study group was a positive
development for Australia at the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) held recently
in Brazil.
The formation of the study group illustrates a willingness by the
ITUs Standardization Sector to meet the unique challenges posed
by next generation networks or NGNs, Australian Communications Authority
(ACA) Acting Chairman Dr Bob Horton said today.
The study group will also provide a focal point for Australian involvement
in international NGN standardisation activities and contributions to those
activities.
Dr Horton said the Standardization Sectors decision to change the
approval process for ITU-T recommendations demonstrated that it is capable
of adapting its working methods to suit the contemporary telecommunications
environment.
The Assembly also approved two resolutions on spam, including one calling
on the ITU-T and the Internet Engineering Task Force to work together
on technical measures to combat spam. Other agreed resolutions included
Internet governance, ENUM and cybersecurity.
Australia worked closely with Commonwealth and Asia-Pacific countries
in preparing for the Assembly and our partnership with the Asia-Pacific
Telecommunity and the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation was
instrumental in ensuring the success of Australian proposals, Dr
Horton said. The overall result for Australia from the meeting was
excellent.
Dr Horton said the ACA would hold a briefing session in late November
to discuss the implications of WTSA-04 for the Australian telecommunications
industry.
Australias delegation comprised one representative from Ericsson
Australia and the Department of Communications, Information Technology
and the Arts, three from the ACA, and a consultant.
The WTSA meets once every four years to consider general policy for the
ITU-T, establish study groups and their expected work programs, and appoint
chairs and vice-chairs of the groups
