Threat to Amateur Radio Microwave Bands - European Radiocommunications
Office
UWB Consultation
The European Radiocommunications Office (ERO) have announced on their
website http://ww.ero.dk/
that they are holding a public consultation on Ultra Wide Band (UWB).
This is a wireless version of USB designed for use in PC's and TV's (it
can handle high definition video).
This technology poses a threat to Amateur operations in the Microwave
bands.
Earlier this year the UK regulator Ofcom held a consulation excerise
on UWB. Ofcom indicated they wished to see UWB across the entire 3.1 -
10GHz spectrum which would have jeopardised Amateur operations as well
as threatening the
development of new Telecomms services and WIMAX.
Amateur groups such the AMSAT-UK, UK Microwave Group and BATC vigourously
responded to the Ofcom proposals.
It is encouraging to see that ERO emphasise that the 6 - 9 GHz section
that should be used for long term UWB operation. This was the key element
of the AMSAT-UK submission to Ofcom. ERO propose masking to protect 5
- 6 GHz and the use of interference mitigation techniques below 5 GHz.
There is bound to be considerable lobbying from commercial interests
wishing to promote the use of 3.1 - 6 GHz for UWB. Amateurs groups need
to consider responding to this consultation to ensure that ERO's resolve
to use 6 - 9 GHz
for long term UWB operation is not watered down .

UWB public consultation – Introductory text
For the purpose of the public consultation on the draft ECC Decision on
Devices using UWB technologies in the bands below 10.6 GHz, comments will
be appreciated in particular on the issues listed below.
It should be noted that the ECC Decision intends to deliver a clear message
that the band 6 to 9 GHz is identified in Europe for long-term UWB operation
without additional mitigation techniques.
