MV Communicator saved from sinking

The radio ship MV Communicator has been prevented from sinking at its anchorage in Saint Margaret's Hope, Orkney, in Scotland.

Police and firemen have pumped out a lot of water, and the pump is now permanently working to ensure that the water does not build up again. For safety reasons, the local authority has decided that the ship should be in shallower water, and it has been moved closer to the pier.

The Communicator was most recently used for an RSL operation by the Superstation, which has now obtained a permanent licence to broadcast to Orkney. However, the permanent operation will be from land, not from the Communicator.

The vessel was earlier used by the British offshore station Laser, then by several (legal) Dutch stations before being towed back across the North Sea.

There are constant rumours about the future of the ship, but in view of her condition it seems unlikely that she will be used again for broadcasting
