Ofcom announce 8th December for CB deregulation, iTrips, 24 GHz Car Radar

In an email, Ofcom have announced that CB Deregulation along with 27MHz CADS, legalisation of iTrips and licence exempt operation of car radars in the 24 GHz Amateur Band will take place on 8th December.

Ofcom held a consultation to amend the Wireless Telegraphy Act Exemption Regulations to allow additional apparatus to operate in the UK without the need to hold a WT Act licence. The scope of the changes to the regulations were detailed at

The necessary regulations have now been authorised and signed. Therefore, Ofcom is pleased to tell you that the proposed amendments to UK regulations will come into force on the 8th December 2006.

To summarise the changes;

· Deregulation of Citizens' Band (CB) Radio;

· Authorisation of "Micro" FM Transmitters on a licence exempt basis in accordance with the new ETSI standard;

· Narrow band use of 24GHz for short range radar (including automotive applications);

· 10GHz Radar Level Gauges;

· Measures, which are binding on the UK, to implement and ensure compliance with the following European Commission Decisions:

• Commission Decision 2006/771/EC establishing a framework for the harmonization of radio spectrum for use by short-range devices in the Community:

• Commission Decision 2005/928/EC of 20 December 2005 on the harmonisation of the 169.4-169.8125MHz frequency band in the Community:

• Commission Decision of 11 July 2005 on the harmonised use of radio spectrum in the 5GHz frequency band for the implementation of wireless access systems including radio local area networks (WAS/RLANs) 2005/513/EC:

· A range of additional measures to harmonise, on a voluntary basis, with Europe where such measures are viewed as beneficial.

· Editorial and minor changes designed to improve the clarity of current exemption arrangements and bring them fully up to date.
