China to launch new television broadcasting satellite

China is set to launch a new satellite for television broadcasting called SinoSat 3 in May 2007, an official said yesterday.

Fan Xinming, an official with SinoSat said the decision was made after SinoSat-2, a broadcasting satellite launched on Oct 29, became defunct due to failure of its solar arrays and communications antenna. Fan said “research and preparation work for the new satellite have been going on smoothly”.

The SinoSat-2 satellite “has unfortunately suffered serious technical anomaly, and the deployment of its solar arrays and communications antennas could not be completed. Therefore, it cannot be put into broadcasting and telecommunications services”, he explained.

“As a Chinese satellite operator, SinoSat will continue to devote itself in the provision of better sky-based communications and broadcasting services to the country and the region,” added Fan.

Further analysis and investigation is being conducted on the technical glitches encountered by SinoSat 2.
