BBC Radio 4 Today programme research

Hi everyone!

Because BBC Radio 4's 'Today' researchers did a 'google' and found out about the Southgate website (they then contacted website editor Richard Brunton, G4TUT, who subsequently set them on me!), I spent an interesting evening on the telephone with BBC researchers last night (November 1) - while trying to bake bread and have my evening meal.

It appears that the extremely popular BBC national Radio 4 programme 'Today' is to carry an item commemorating the first wireless 'SOS' (more likely CQD).

The researchers were keen to ask me much about Morse, how much we use it, etc. They also seemed very interested to hear that my grandchildren were able to recognise my callsign in Morse (I only found out about this by accident!) from hearing it so often while in my shack.

Asking about our 'telegraphese' abbreviations (73, 88 cuagn, gn, gb , etc) the researchers realised that Amateur Radio operators (as we already knew) have been using the same system of abbreviating messages (as youngsters do when sending texts!) - for many more years!

I don't know when the item will be broadcast on the Today programme, but anyone interested in listening to it can do so via the BBC website.

Just select 'listen live' to Today and off you go. If you can't listen between 0700-0900UTC on Friday 3rd November, the BBC website has a 'listen again' facility.

Hopefully the item will promote our hobby and show that Morse is still a viable method of communicating and we can all enjoy the 'extra' language facility it provides if we wish to use it.

Best wishes to everyone.
