Amateur
Radio in the BBC Sky at Night magazine
The December issue of the BBC Sky At Night magazine, in the shops now,
has an article featuring Amateur Radio.
The 3 page article written by David Worboys M0ZLB
is entitled 'How to... Get pictures from space'
and starts on page 82.
In it David describes the Amateur Radio SpaceCam1 system, which is onboard,
the International Space Station (ISS) and provides a step-by-step guide
on how to receive ISS Slow Scan TV (SSTV) pictures.
It is written in a straightforward way that should be readily understandable
by the readers of that magazine, very few of who would be Radio Amateurs.
At the end of the article David gives a plug for the Amateur Radio Foundation
courses and hopefully some of the readers will be interested enough to
follow it up.
In "Inbox" on page 23 of the magazine there is a letter regarding
the need for a licence to receive ISS pictures (you don't need one) and
the editor references David’s SpaceCam1 article.
The article illustrates something we could do with a lot more of - Radio
Amateurs writing about the hobby in non-radio magazines. It's a very good
way to get Amateur Radio more widely known.
SpaceCam1 Status:
The SpaceCam1 SSTV system is currently switched off, but it is hoped that
it will become operational again in the near future.
