Plans announced for right wing public broadcaster in the Netherlands
A prominent local politician in Rotterdam, Ronald Sorensen, has announced plans to set up a new right-wing broadcasting foundation in the Netherlands, which will seek a membership of 50,000+ by 1 April next year, giving it the right to airtime on the public networks.
The long-term goal is to increase this to 150,000+ which would entitle it to more airtime.
Sorensen is the leader of Liveable Rotterdam, the second-biggest party on the Rotterdam city council.
Liveable Rotterdam was previously led by Pim Fortuyn, the right wing politician assassinated in 2002.
The new broadcaster has the provisional working title of the Netherlands Populist Broadcaster (PON). Sorenesen claims that the supporters of right-wing MPs such as Geert Wilders and Rita Verdonk are ignored by the current public broadcasters.
