SO-67 in AustraliaAlex VK5ALX reports strong signals from the Amateur Radio satellite SumbandilaSat SO-67, but he reports interference to the satellite uplink on 145.880 from non-amateur stations in Indonesia. Alex writes: SO-67's repeater was being triggered randomly by the interfering signals. Attempts at accessing the satellite during this period proved near impossible. A couple of times when I did manage access I was "kicked off" within a second or so. By the time the satellite was out of range of the Indonesians there was only 5 minutes access remaining. In this time I managed to work Larry, VK5HBG, also sited in Whyalla. No VK6 stations were heard although any stations trying to get in from northern WA would have had very little chance because of the interference. The first part of the Western Australia pass on Nov 21 at 0040 UT can be heard here: Australia pass on Saturday morning Nov 20 at 2304 UT Consistently strong signals were heard during the first Australia pass on Saturday morning (21 Nov). Stations heard were VK2WEL, VK2AYE, VK2MAL, VK2TJU and VK5ALX. I think I was the only one using narrow FM deviation [2.5 kHz] as my audio is much lower than the rest. While the Sumbandila control team does suggest narrow FM there does not seem to be any problems with using normal [5 kHz]. The biggest thing to watch is that you let the satellite transmitter tail drop-out before transmitting, just as you should do when operating FM repeaters. The sort of operation that you often hear on the other FM sats (jumping in without a break) has no place on this one. Recording of pass can be grabbed at this link:
