70cm long-duration balloon flight todayM6SBX and 2E0DRX/M6DRX will be launching a High Altitude balloon from Cambridge on Saturday, Nov 13, at 15:00. As well as the 50 baud 70cm beacon it will also carry a beacon for CW and Hellschrieber. There will be a small vent in the balloon and the idea is that it will achieve a float at about 18km and travel for much longer than a normal rise-and-burst. It is anticipated it will head towards the Netherlands. The payload consists of a new Atlas flight computer (ATmega328 with arduino bootloader, Radiometrix NTX2 and FSA03 Ublox GPS module) by 2E0DRX and a back up beacon. The flight itself should last all night if all goes well so will require some extreme tracking. The main payload will be transmitting RTTY on 434.075MHz (using dl-fldigi just select Atlas from the list, the only issue is the shift is a little larger so you'll need to use the custom setting or wait until it cools a bit - then the shift will be right on!) - so 50baud, 500 shift, ASCII-8, no parity, 1.5 stop. It'll transmit once a minute and will transmit 2 identical strings in a row. The radio has a crystal oven which will attempt to stabalise at 1 deg C to maintain the frequency but this is experimental and may not work. : We are going to need a lot of people to track this one, you need a radio that can to UHF (70cm) and SSB and be able to connect it to a computer which will be running dl-fldigi - Frequencies: High Altitude Balloon Chatroom ALIEN Amateur Radio balloon talk - files & links A Paper Aeroplane Released Into Space on 70cm Video "Teddy Bears in Space"- HAB talk by M0TEK and M6JCX you can watch it online at http://www.batc.tv/channel.php?ch=1 Or download a copy of the video at High Altitude Balloons Free dl-fldigi software
