Amateur Radio operators help protect highwaysAmateur radio clubs in Chautauqua County, New York State, got some good publicity for the hobby following the Halloween weekend. The Post-Journal carried an excellent article on the ham radio clubs' efforts to keep the highways safe that weekend. Ham radio operators from the Chautauqua County Radio Amateurs, North County Amateur Radio Club and Chautauqua County Amateur FM Association spent Halloween weekend helping the State Police, Troop T safeguard travelers on Interstate 90 from ghosts goblins, ghouls and vandals. More importantly, the radio operators stationed themselves at overpasses on the Thruway to insure that no one would throw pumpkins or other potentially lethal objects in the path of travelers below. The operators, under the auspices of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service or RACES, used their mobile radio equipment to report to a net control station in the Emergency Operation Center in Mayville on the 146.625 repeater near Fredonia provided by the NCARC.
