Still no word of progress in CBC/CMG talks

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and its biggest union, the Canadian Media Guild (CMG), have been continuing contract talks in Ottawa all weekend, and a news blackout was extended to 6 am local time yesterday, and later to 6pm.

The discussions are taking place at the federal labour department offices, with a federal mediator involved.
They were asked to move their talks to Ottawa last week by Federal Labour Minister Joe Fontana.

The CBC locked out its 5,500 CMG employees, journalists, programme producers and technicians, on 15 August in a contract dispute. Since then, CBC has been reduced to a "bare bones" service produced by management.

The CBC made an offer to settle the dispute on Thursday. The union rejected the offer, but both parties agreed to a news blackout while further talks continued.
