WIA meets with BPL company

WIA Director Phil Wait VK2DKN and others Amateurs have met with both Brian Green MHA, the Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, and Aurora Energy.

It was made clear to the Minister at this meeting that BPL technology has the potential to cause significant interference to all HF spectrum users, not only radio amateurs, to the point where they can no longer operate in
or near the BPL trial area.

The WIA highlighted the fast response emergency capability of radio amateurs to the Minister along with a range of examples including the recent hurricanes in the US and the Indian Ocean tsunami.

During the meeting the Aurora representative stated that Aurora Energy had rolled out BPL in Hobart three months prior to the ACMA's notification of the trial. Clearly Aurora has chosen not to follow the ACMA's guidelines concerning
notification of Access BPL trials.

It's believed the Minister and his advisors are now better informed on the issues of concern to radio amateurs thanks to the WIA.
