Effects of Windfarms on Radar

Wednesday 12th October - 6.00 for 6.30pm

Tilting at Windmills - Radar Effects and some not so Quixotic Solutions by Dr Clive Jackson, Systems Modelling Engineer, BAE SYSTEMS Insyte.

There are concerns over the effects that offshore construction of windfarms will have on radar, which have been reinforced by recent trials which indicated degradation of cover near windfarms.

This lecture will outline some of the causes and effects of radar interaction with windfarms, the results of a number of ongoing trials and a range of options for mitigating windfarm impact on radar.

This lecture will be held in the Marconi Athletic and Social
Club (MASC) on Beehive Lane, Great Baddow [Chelmsford ARS meeting place]

I shall certainly be attending what should be a very interesting talk. The effects of Windfarms on radio signals has of course been a concern to Radio Amateurs and broadcast companies for some time. A windfarm forced a UHF TV relay station in the Orkneys to be relocated at some considerable expense.

The BBC mentions the effects of Windfarms on TV reception in this document:

In his Sunday Times column on September 18th, Michael Portilio described how in Spain, windfarms were spreading like a vicious pox, scything down migrating birds.
In September, 47 vultures heading for the Straits of Gibraltar were felled by turbine blades.
