CARS Foundation Course celebrates 5 successful yearsThe Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) Foundation courses have now
been running for 5 years. Over the years the club has developed an extensive set of Power Point presentations for the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced which can be downloaded from the clubs website. The dedicated team of CARS volunteers will be starting their next Foundation evening course on Thursday 11th January. The course, held at Danbury Village Hall, is six weeks of practical and theory, but the view from previous course attendees, is that it's not just boring theory but a whole load of fun as well. Learning about radio communications then complimenting what you have been taught by using the radio works well for most people and it's easier to take all the information in. Radio Amateurs not only communicate all over the world but into space as well. All of the astronauts currently onboard the International Space Station are licenced Radio Amateurs and during their spare time they talk to other Radio Amateurs back on earth. There is a special thrill in talking to an astronaut out in space! Several CARS members have talked to the Astronauts on 2 metres and 70cm and now that Ofcom has granted Foundation holders full access to the Amateur Satellite Service they too can join in the excitement of space contacts. To do all this it is necessary to obtain an amateur transmitting licence. These licences are only issued to those who can prove that they are able to install, maintain and operate their equipment properly and therefore don’t cause a nuisance to other radio users world wide. Fortunately it is not difficult to obtain a licence, and gaining the licence gives a real feeling of achievement, apart from the fact that you will know more about radio and its technology. Places on the course are limited so advanced booking is essential. Those interested in attending should contact the Training Manager Clive
Ward G1EUC.
