Teenager over the moon with win

A series of experiments involving the Moon and a space station has won a Wick High School pupil an engineering award says BBC OnLine.

Erik Mackay, 16, won the Flipside Magazine prize for his studies using radio technology.

He calculated the distance between the Earth and Moon by bouncing radio signals and contacted the International Space Station using ham radio.

Erik was presented with a laptop from television science and history expert Adam Hart-Davies.

The schoolboy's teacher Peter Darmady added: "Erik's forte is in radio work and over the last few years he has built up an impressive list of accomplishments."

The award is sponsored by IET which publishes engineering publications including Flipside.
