Data-Over-Mains - HomePlug might use 2-50 MHz

It looks like a future HomePlug product may use the Radio Spectrum from 2 to 50 MHz to transfer data around the home via the mains power supply.

A report in EE Times 'HomePlug claims victory in standards fray' indicates that future HomePlug products could use the spectrum from 2-50 MHz for very high speed data transfer.

Devices that transfer data over the mains power supply can cause significant pollution to the HF Radio Spectrum which is a precious natural resource.

Personal Computer World magazine have this to say about the problems of data-over-mains devices:

"Mains wiring acts as an aerial when passing radio-frequency data signals and, as we have reported before there are fears about the cummulative effect in cities if the technology gets taken up on the same scale as WiFi."

US Patents 20070054622 and 20070002772 relate to the use of 2-50 MHz for "data-over-mains".

Patent 20070002772 says:
"communications over the MV power line 110 using a modem 141 may transmit within a frequency range of approximately 2-50 MHz"

Patent 20070054622 says:
"In one embodiment a broadband frequency range such as 20-50 MHz, 2-50 MHz, or 30-50 MHz carrier frequency bands may be used"
