Britain gets a new broadcasting minister in cabinet reshuffleBritish Prime Minister Gordon Brown reshuffled his cabinet yesterday, and the news was dominated by the high profile appointment of the controversial Peter Mandelson as Business Secretary. But there were some interesting changes elsewhere, notably the creation of the new role of Minister for Communications, Technology and Broadcasting. The job has gone to Stephen Carter, former Chief Executive of the communications regulator Ofcom. Since he is not an elected MP, he has been given a peerage and will sit in the House of Lords. The post is ranked at junior ministerial level, meaning that Lord Carter will not have his own department, but will work from an existing department. Which one isn’t yet clear, but it seems likely that he will report to Culture Secretary Andy Burnham at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
