John Jackson, G3TZZ - Silent KeyIt is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of John Jackson, G3TZZ. Sadly, John died on Friday, 24th October, following a heart attack. A resident of the Borough of Enfield, John was probably one of the best-known radio amateurs in London. Known affectionately by scores of radio amateurs simply as 'TIZ', John could always be relied-upon to lend a helping hand to newcomers to the hobby, offer expert technical advice on radio and electronics, or provide unrivalled guidance to fellow radio amateurs on the thorny subject of planning permission for masts and antennas. In the late 70's, along with the Roger Glover, G8IUC and the late Bill Wild, G3KSW, John was heavily involved in the development of both the GB3NL and GB3LV voice repeaters, and was instrumental in gaining the Council's permission for their siting on Enfield's Civic Centre. He was also the 'Repeater Keeper' for both devices. GB3NL entered service in December, 1979, with LV following in 1981. The two repeaters were built and are maintained by Roger G8IUC, and thanks must go to all three for their considerable input in providing us with a service which we tend to take for granted. A magistrate, school governor and Tory Councillor on Enfield Council, John was twice Mayor of Enfield and was about to become Mayor again for an 'unprecedented' third time before his untimely death. John's death will be deeply felt amongst those whose lives he touched and his departure will undoubtedly be a huge loss, not only to the amateur radio community, but to the residents of Enfield as well. He will be sorely missed. I count myself as one of those who were truly fortunate enough to have known him.
