USS Midway operators to call Midway Island

The San Diego Union Tribune reports that the Midway aircraft carrier is about to get in touch with its historic roots.

Ham radio operators on the USS Midway Museum's flight deck plan to make radio contact this week with radio operators on Midway Island. The USS Midway got its name from the important World War II victory at Midway Island in 1942.

Federal officials are allowing ham radio operators on the island, now a preserve, for the first time in about 10 years, said museum spokesman Scott McGaugh. Because it is rarely accessible, Midway Island ranks as the 24th most-sought contact by ham radio operators around the world, he said.

Veterans, including those who took part in the Battle of Midway, and the general public are invited to observe the transmissions from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Oct. 17 at the museum.
