New laws could wreak havoc on in-car technology

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that CAR makers in the US are fighting a move by Californian regulators to force them to use new environmentally friendly windows that keep cabins cool, reducing the need for air-conditioning.

The car industry says the new windows, coated with tiny reflective metallic specks, could wreak havoc on satellite navigation systems, mobile phone reception and garage-door openers.

Other experts have suggested they will interfere with electronic toll tags and tracking bracelets on parolees.

The Detroit News reports that under the California Air Resources Board's new “cool cars” regulations, car makers will have to build cars with windows that block out 45 per cent of the sun's energy by 2014 and 60 per cent by 2016.

In a submission to the board, satellite navigation supplier Garmin said the special coating would degrade satellite reception.

The new regulations could also spell the end of a Californian staple, the soft-top Jeep Wrangler.
