Airship America Rescue - 100th Anniversary Special Event OperationsThe ARRL report that US special event stations will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Airship America rescue. In the UK, the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society will be operating GB100MWT - Marconi Wireless Telegraph - from Sandford Mill in Chelmsford, the "birthplace of radio", on October 17. When the Airship America was forced to ditch near Bermuda the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company operator Jack Irwin sent out a CQD distress call which resulted in the rescue of all onboard along with the vital radio equipment. It was the first advertised airborne wireless operation and the first air-sea rescue involving wireless. Despite not achieving the objective of crossing the Atlantic, the 72 hour, 1008 mile voyage was the longest powered flight at that time. On their return to New York the crew were given a ticker tape welcome.
