Royal Flying Doctor Service award
Amateur radio hosts many awards right around the globe,
but few would be more worthy than this one, which
unashamedly aims to boost the coffers of a worthy
Australian foundation.
It's the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which has
for three generations provided a uniquely caring service predominantly
to those in the outback.
The RFDS Award is an excellent opportunity for radio
amateurs to help the work of the Royal Flying Doctor
Service, now in its 76th year of operation.
To earn this award, you need to spell out the words ROYAL
FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE using the callsigns of stations you have worked.
You can use as many letters as you wish from the prefixes and/or suffixes
of station callsigns you've worked or heard from anywhere in the world
to make up the words.
It really is very simple isn't it!
The award is available to any radio amateur or short wave
listener anywhere in the world and is available annually,
with a new certificate being introduced each year.
Contacts can be on any band and any mode, but each
callsign may only be used once each year to claim.
Seeing this award originated in Western Australia, VK6
stations don't need to specify call signs, as they are all
considered "Instant Qualifiers". Now here's where the
fund-raising aspect of it comes in. While certificates cost
$5 each, only $1, being enough for return postage ONLY, is
taken by the awards manager. The balance is sent to the
RFDS.
Award manager Dave, VK6ATE, says his goal is to raise
$28,000 in 10 years, but let's see if we can do even better.
The full rules are available from Dave, VK6ATE on (08)
9305 7295 or by writing to the award manager,
