New look for 'Amateur Radio Mirror'

South Africa's Amateur Radio Mirror Team has been discussing a new format for the weekly programme.

Following several Intecnet discussions over the past few months, there was a clear indication that the South African Radio League (SARL) and Amateur Radio needs to focus more on bringing Amateur Radio in front of the general public and in particular the youth.

In times gone by there was a lot of activity on 40 and 80 AM which many listeners to the then popular LM Radio would stumble across as they tuned their radios to the 41 and 90 metre bands which were the popular frequency bands used by LM Radio and later also Springbok Radio. As this is no longer the case, we have to find other ways to bring Amateur Radio to the attention of would be enthusiasts.

The proposal is to devote the first 15 minutes of Amateur Radio Mirror International to more general amateur radio issues such as:
• Interviews with young people on what motivated them to become radio amateurs;
• Discussions with prominent people in industry and how amateur radio influenced their career and success in the communications industry;
• What do radio amateurs talk about, featuring excerpts of interesting QSOs;
• Short-wave Listening as a stepping stone to amateur radio and many more.

This slot will also be digitised and made available on the SARL web, with more prominence on the home page on the programme and general article on Amateur Radio. This will be supported by a public relations campaign in the media.

To achieve this we need to hear from you. What do you think? Please let the team have suggestions and contact details of people who can be interviewed. We need lots of pictures of young people operating and public service events.
