British Astronomical Association Radio Astonomy Group News and meeting reminder

Welcome to several new members! The recent publication of the Circular, and a short article in the RSGB Radcom produced a flurry of enquiries, and as you can see, we now have about 90 interested parties. That is a very encouraging sign, and has meant that we can broaden our activities somewhat. At this rate, the entire population of Northampton will be recruited by 2011...

Circular
We have had feedback about the Circular from only about 15 people - please let us know what you think! Paper copies of the Circular will soon be available, at a cost of £3 including postage, from Karen Holland. They will have colour covers and b&w inside. Please make cheques payable to 'BAA Radio
Astronomy'. They should be available at the Meeting.

We have received only one entry for the Circular caption competiton, one entry for the bumper sticker, and one offer of an article for the next issue. We would be very grateful for more... (otherwise one lucky person wins the competions by default). If you would like to see another information-packed Circular, please put pen to paper and tell us about your observatories, your projects, or just send some photos for the Gallery. Even a photo of your cat in an astronomically suggestive pose might get published!

As you may have read previously, I am assuming unless you specifically tell me otherwise that you consent to your email address being made public in these notes and in the Circular. The last time I asked, no-one asked for their email address to be concealed, and so I continue to make them public. My intention is simply to encourage as many of you as possible to communicate. If you prefer your email to be private, please let me know, and we will record your preference in the database. If I have your name wrong, or you'd prefer to withdraw from the Group, please let me know.

Meeting
Yet another reminder to everyone that we have our first public meeting in Northampton on October 8th, at 10:00am. For full details, see http://www.britastro.org/radio. (James' spacecraft launch has been delayed, so he hopes to attend as planned.) We are expecting quite a number of people to
attend, and look forward to meeting you there. Anyone may come along, you do not have to be a BAA member, so fill up that car!

There will be a raffle during the day, with the first prize of a 1.4GHz amplifier donated by Jeff Lichtman of Radio Astronomy Supplies, and several radio astronomy books donated by Cambridge University Press. The meeting
entry fee of £3 covers light refreshments and a raffle ticket. Since we have no way of knowing how many people will attend, it has been impossible to arrange catering for lunch in advance: we will endeavour to arrange food on the day. You are, of course, free to bring your own lunch (Terry would
appreciate a barrel of anything brewed at least as far north as Birmingham).

Remember that anyone is welcome to bring along a poster, or to give a talk in the afternoon session. If your talk is presented using Powerpoint, we can include it on the CDROM of the proceedings.

We hope to end the meeting with a visit to a local pub, with perhaps a meal in the evening for anyone who would like to stay.

Thanks for all your support so far - it has been very hard work to get this far, but it does all seem to be coming together rather well!
