IARU Region 1 Conference
SARL report
Larry Price, W4RA, opened the 20th International Amateur Radio Union
Region 1 Conference on Sunday morning 11 September 2005 in Davos, Switzerland.
Other speakers at the opening were Rudolf Rieder, head of the Swiss Telecommunications
Authority and Primie, HB9AAQ, vice president of the Swiss Amateur Radio
Society (USKA) and Ole Garpstad, LA2RR, president of IARU Region 1. Fifty-six
societies were represented at the conference, 47 at conference and 9 proxies.
Ten of these societies were from Africa.
During the plenary the members of Committee C2 - Finances were elected
from the various delegates. Graham, ZS6GJH, was elected to serve on this
committee for the duration of the conference. Tim Ellam, VE6SH, vice president
of IARU did a presentation on the future structure and role of the IARU.
On Sunday afternoon the various Working Groups held their meetings. John,
ZS5JF, attended the EMC WG, Graham, ZS6GJH, attended the STARS WG and
Dennis, ZS4BS, attended the ARDF WG. Dennis, ZS4BS, was appointed as STARS
Sub-regional co-ordinator for Southern Africa. On Sunday evening an IARU
Liaison workshop was held.
From Monday to Wednesday, Committee C3 - Administration and Organisational
Committee, C4 - HF and C5 - VHF/UHF and Microwave held their meetings
working through approximately 250 conference papers. The C2 - Finances
committee held their meetings every evening. On Tuesday morning, Hans
Zimmerman, HB9AQS, the IARU Emergency Communications Co-ordinator, presented
a discussion paper on Emergency Communications based on the Tampere Conference
Thursday was spent in the final Plenary where all the recommendations
from the four main committees were ratified. The conference was closed
on Thursday evening with a Gala dinner hosted by the Swiss Amateur Radio
Society, USKA.
During the Conference, the RSGB nominated Graham, ZS6GJH ,to serve on
the Executive Committee (EC) of the IARU Region 1. The Norwegian Radio
Relay League seconded this nomination. During the election for the EC,
Graham was however not successful.
The objectives the SARL delegation set out to achieve were all realized.
